Syncing with Dropbox
#1 - What is syncing and how does it work ?
Syncing allows allows your provider settings to be stored in the “Cloud” using the Dropbox service. This enables your account settings to be synced across multiple versions of Quota. You can setup your accounts on your desktop with Quota for Mac and then sync them across all your mobile devices (iPhone, iPad and Android)
#2 - Is it secure?
You can read how Dropbox store their files here, in addition to the Dropbox file security, the data used by Quota is encrypted locally before being stored in the “cloud” using your own PIN + secret code. Your information can only be read by the Quota client (Android/iOS/OSX versions) when combined with the same PIN used to create the backup.
#3 - What do I need to make this work?
In order to enable syncing you must complete the following :-
•A PIN configured within Quota (Android users tap “i”, iOS users tap “settings” from Summary screen, OSX goto preferences)
•A Dropbox account (You can set this up for free)
#4 - How do I Backup my Providers ?
Android
•From the Summary screen, Tap i then select “Backup/Restore”
•Login to your Dropbox account
•Tap Backup (All Providers will be backed up)
•Verify the Providers can be read by Tapping restore which will show all providers in the Dropbox backup
iPhone/iPad
•iPhone: from the Summary screen, Tap “Settings”
•iPad: Tap the icon in the lower right hand corner and select “App Settings”
•Tap “Backup and Restore with Dropbox”
•Select “Link Quota with Dropbox” and enter your dropbox username/password when prompted
•Select “Backup All Providers”
•Verify the backup by selecting “Restore Providers” to see the providers stored within the backup
OSX (Version 1.1 AppStore and above)
•You need to download the Dropbox client for OSX which creates a local directory called “Dropbox”
•Ensure you have a “Quota” directory in your Dropbox folder (iOS backups automatically create this)
•From the Quota menu, select File, “Backup Providers”
•Choose “To Dropbox” to save a backup which can be read by any mobile client
•Choose “To Local” to save the backup file locally
#5 - How do I sync accounts to another device using Quota ?
Android
•From the Dropbox screen (see Backup) select Restore
•You should see a “Add Providers” popup, from here select/deselect the provider and tap “OK”
iPhone/iPad
•From the Dropbox screen (see Backup) select “Restore Providers”
•You will see another row in the table “Providers”, Tap this to choose which providers are restored
•If you want to only restore 1 or 2 providers, Tap “Unselect all providers” then choose which providers to add
•Tap “Restore” (top right) to confirm the restore
OSX (Version 1.1 AppStore and above)
•Select File, Restore Providers
•Choose “From Dropbox” for the file which is synced with mobile devices
•Choose “From Local” to select a local backup file
•Choose the providers to restore
•Click the “Restore Providers” button
The restore will only succeed if the PIN you have setup within Quota is the same PIN used for the backup.
#5 - I received an error when restoring, Why?
If the provider definition is not installed on the local device, it cannot be restored.
#6 - Can I have multiple backups or configurations?
Yes, by default the common backup file is stored in your Dropbox folder under Quota/Providers.quota, this file can be renamed or copied to another location. To restore a certain backup and make it available to the mobile devices, ensure it’s named Providers.quota. The OSX client allows naming and backup/restoring of multiple profiles.
#7 - What about automatic syncing with having to tap restore?
As providers are usually setup then forgotten about the current implementation allows much more flexibility. Most people only want to setup a provider once and then have that provider available on multiple devices.
The Backup/Restore method has these advantages :-
•Your in control - you choose which providers appear on what device. iPads/Desktop suit having many providers setup (OSX version allows providers to be grouped). You may only want your favourite providers appear on your mobile phone.
•You can use the Backup/Restore to effectively copy/paste Providers allowing you to setup multiple mobiles with one Provider.
